Dogs can suffer from stress and tension just like humans and other animals. Stress can result from important changes and a chronic lack of confidence. So dogs can for instance become stressed by travel, noise and by a stay in kennels.

Fear of noise is a common cause. Fear of being left alone can lead to self-mutilation, destructiveness and fouling. Continued stress can even affect a dog’s immune system and lead to health and behavioural problems (e.g.: barking, destructiveness, fouling and aggression).

A traumatic experience can also cause a change in a dog’s behaviour, think of fireworks, a fight with another dog or abuse. Another cause of behavioural problems can be a lack of socialisation as a puppy.
