Skin and coat: the largest organ
Human's skin and animals and coat reflects its’ inner health. Many factors can influence the condition, not only nutrition and illness, but also outside influences such as UV radiation, air pollution, bacteria and viruses. The skin and coat is not only the largest organ, but are also the main protection against external infections. In short, a healthy skin is not only beautiful to look at; it’s essential for anyones health.
Countless studies have indicated the benefits of essential fatty acids in relation to a healthy skin & coat condition. However research has also demonstrated significant differences in product qualities.
The body needs fatty acids
Not all fat is healthy. Unhealthy fats such as saturated fats and trans fatty acids, are often used in the preparation of food. The healthy fats are unsaturated, and as the body cannot make these important nutrients, they must come from the diet or supplements.
What are healthy fatty acids?
Poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA’s) and essential fatty acids (EFA’s) are different descriptions for healthy fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential components of all cells and govern many aspects of health including: cardiovascular, brain and eye, joint, skin and coat.
The two well known families of EFA’s are Omega-3 (from Fish oil a sources of EPA and DHA) and Omega-6 (Evening Primrose oil and Borage oil, both sources of GLA).
Scientists have shown the bio-availability of Evening Primrose oil to be higher than Borage oil Efamol therefore uses Primrose oil as its source of GLA. A high bio-availability guarantees the optimal absorption of a nutrient the body.
When is there an insufficient intake of essential fatty acids?
The intake of EFA’s might be insufficient in cases of:
- the poor quality of the pets everyday food
- difficulty in the animals conversion of EFA’s into the active fatty acids, indeed cats lack completely the enzyme system necessary to effect this conversion
- additional requirements due to life stage (growing, pregnancy, lactating and ageing)
- poor general health conditions (skin & coat, joint and mobility problems)
With respect to EFA’s and food it worth mentioning the fact that while some foods might contain the right fatty acids according to the label, production or storage conditions may result in the loss or deterioration of these by oxidation and other factors.
